Can I use my parent's car insurance to buy a car?

Shad Bushweller: By law you must have full coverage insurance to buy a car and you also have a certain amount of time of automatic coverage to add a car to your current insurance policy. However if your just a driver listed on your parents insurance policy you need to contact them, tell them your situation, and see if you qualify for the automatic coverage period also. If you don't qualify, you may have to wait one more day before picking up your new car. Although by doing this you will stay legal until your insurance kicks in at 12:01 tonight. In most states when a person is listed on their parent's car insurance policy. They're usually listed as a driver only on a certain vehicle. This person can stay on the parent's insurance as long as they keep the listed vehicles on the policy and the person listed as a driver does not purchase a car by themselves. You can contact your car salesman and see if they'll take your current insurance as proof so you can pick up your ne! w car. However you want to make sure that you're covered. Contacting your current insurance company to verify you'll be covered will give you peace of mind.If all else fails. Ask your salesman if one of your parents can come with you and pick up the car. You can give them your insurance that kicks in tonight and your current insurance with your parents name on it.Congratulations on your new car!...Show more
